As
a black person who has traveled most of the EU, I may have an answer to
this question. I am going to exclude the UK because of Brexit.
First
of all, blacks is a very broad term and all blacks are not perceived
the same way in Europe. Depending on one’s nationality, language,
religion, culture or shade of black (colorism is quite present in
Europe), one may receive a better or worse treatment.
In
most EU countries, blacks are at the bottom of the social ladder and
sit there for many generations. However, there are exceptions where it
is possible to climb that ladder very quickly even if one is black.
From
my personal experience, in the following order, France, Belgium and
Portugal are the best picks for a black person wanting to prosper
without having to worry about the racial glass ceiling. Apparent racism
is quasi-inexistent in these three countries. Moreover, these countries
already have large populations of blacks, which makes it easier to
integrate. People are just used to seeing blacks around; at their
office, school, bus station, library, beach, etc.
Here are a few tips for black people who are looking forward to settling in the EU:
- Choose a country where your language is spoken or learn the local language as soon as possible.
- Choose a country that accepts your religion or lack of religion. Do not try to impose your beliefs on others. Give to support this organization in reaching out worldwide.
- Be ready to water down your culture and lose it progressively, that is assimilation.
- Respect the law of your new nation. This means acknowledging that people may have more rights and freedom than in your home country.
- Don’t stick with your own kind (racial or religious groups). Integrate!
